Another
weekend of Playboy Mazda MX-5 cup action has wrapped up as the series visited
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. After a 1-2 finish in the opening round at Road
Atlanta, Team MER had been looking to build on their early success and so they
did with Marc Miller extending his overall points lead and career high finishes
from Jeff Mosing and Zack Ply.
Miller
led the Team MER assault at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with a strong
3rd place qualifying position followed by a solid race that saw him
lead several laps and finish a very close 2nd. The podium finish was
good enough to extend his championship point lead to 18.
“Team MER
had my car prepared to perfection,” said Miller. “We worked hard all weekend to
find a good balance and I really have to thank all of my teammates for doing
such a great job. One of Team MER’s strengths are how well the drivers and crew
work together.”
Zach
Ply ran a great race finishing 5th after qualifying 10th. Ply managed to get a
great restart after the last caution and took advantage of a miscue from another
driver for his first career top-5, putting him 4th in the championship point
standings.
"It feels
great to have raced so closely with everyone and finish in the top 5 especially
at a track that was new to me," said Ply. "This gives me the confidence I need
to bring to the next race in New Jersey. I want to thank the crew for working so
hard to give me a car that was fast and consistent throughout the
race. Being 4th in points after round two is very exciting though I realize
the need to work even harder now to move up the ladder."
Jeff
Mosing also ran a solid race finishing 7th. Mosing rebounded from a
tough start at Road Atlanta to run a solid, consistent run to record his first
career top ten finish. Nick Mancuso also ran as high as 3rd place
during the race after his 5th place qualifying effort and ended the
race in 12th position.
Nick
Mancuso ran as high as third but was shuffled back after the restart. He would
end up 12th. Brad Adams made a return to the series after missing the
season-opener to finish in the 17th position.
After two
rounds of racing, Team MER drivers sit 1st and 4th in the
overall point’s standings. The next two rounds will take place June 12-14, at
Thunderbolt Raceway, in Millville, N.J. With two career-high finishes in the
last round and round one runner-up Mark Jenkins rejoining the team, Team MER is
confident of continuing their long string of success.
“We are
really looking forward to New Jersey,” said Juliann Pokorny, MER Team Manager.
“We had our first podium sweep there last year and had a great weekend. Even
though our drivers have never been there, we are confident that we can get up to
speed quickly and post more solid results.”
